Description

Lithography was born in the 18 th century through an accidental exploit of Alois
Senefelder, a German playwright and quickly gained popularity amongst the artisans.
The word is derived from two root German words lithos (stone) and graphien (to write).
It is unlike other forms of printing that rely on etching as here the original artworks are
printed and reproduced on metallic plates or flat stones. Artists engage in lithography
through direct drawing on the printing substance by making use of specialized drawing
tools like greasy pencils or letho crayons. On the completion of drawing the surface
undergoes a treatment with a chemical etch to make the prints permanent by bonding
greasing colour onto the surface
