Mughal Miniatures

One must always maintain one’s connection to the past and yet ceaselessly pull away from it.” – Gaston Bachelard

The Mughal Miniatures are finely crafted artworks with vivid patterns and colours. They are a blend of Indian, European, and Persian styles of painting. The characteristic feature includes delicate lines and the use of bold and vivid colours. They are small in size and range within a few square inches. These artistic creations are known for their richness of style and a highly intricate design that needs a magnifying glass to note all the subtleties. Traditionally, the artists make use of natural colours that they derive from real silver and gold, pearls, shells, precious stones, and indigo. Mughal miniatures are highly detailed paintings mostly used to illustrate manuscripts and art books. Despite their tiny sizes, they are incredibly precise, with some lines painted using brushes composed of a single hair.
