Gond Tribal Art

“If you hear a voice within you say, ‘You cannot paint,’ then by all means paint, and that voice will be silenced” – Vincent Van Gogh.

Gond Tribal Art is practiced by the Gond community, the country’s largest tribe, and dates back to 1400 years and are well known for their artistic skills, mainly painting or music. Many paintings are visual depictions of these songs. It showcases the daily lives of the tribe at the same time it’s their own way to record their history.
Gond people have a belief that viewing a good image brings them good luck. Their paintings are a reflection and form of respect for man’s close connection with his natural surroundings.
Elements like multiple parallel lines in different directions and dots in certain directions add a sense of movement to the still images.
